Climate Data Record Variable Exploration

Climate Data Records (CDR) provide dozens of variables. Use the information below to help find what you’re looking for. Click through to the product pages for access to the data. Data is available online, some are supported via THREDDS and AIRS. Most are also available via the Cloud (e.g. AWS, Google).

PATMOS-x Cloud Properties, Cloud Properties - ISCCP H-Series and Polar Pathfinder - Extended provide several cloud parameters (cloud fraction, pressure, optical depth, etc.) The Hydrological Properties bundle only provides cloud, liquid, water path and ice water path.

CDR Period of Record Spatial Coverage Spatial Resolution Temporal
AVHRR Cloud Properties - NASA CDR 1978–2016 Global 4 km twice daily
PATMOS-x Cloud Properties 1981–present Global 0.1 deg twice daily
Polar Pathfinder -Extended 1982–present Poles (EASE grid) 25 km twice daily
Cloud Properties - ISCCP H-Series 1983–present Global 1 deg 3 hourly
Hydrological Properties 2000–present Global ~16 km swath twice daily

All data are global gridded at 2.5 deg. equal angle.

CDR Period of Record Layers
Mean Layer Temperature - NOAA CDR 1978–present TMT, TUT, TLS
Mean Layer Temperature - RSS 1978–2023 TLT, TMT, TLS, TTS
Mean Layer Temperature - UAH 1978–2023 TLT, TMT, TLS, TTS
Mean Layer Temperature - UCAR (Lower Stratosphere) 1986–2019 TTS, TLS
Mean Layer Temperature - UCAR (Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere) CDR 1986-2019 TTS

We have several CDRs related to precipitation. Each has its own unique strengths.

CDR Period of Record Spatial Coverage Spatial Resolution Temporal
Precipitation - GPCP Monthly CDR 1979–present Global gridded @ 2.5 deg Monthly
Precipitation - PERSIANN CDR 1983–present 60N - 60S gridded @ 0.25 deg Daily
Precipitation - GPCP Daily CDR 1996–present Global gridded @ 1 deg Daily
Precipitation - CMORPH CDR 1998–present Global gridded @ 0.25 deg Daily
Hydrological Properties CDR* 2000–present Global Satellite swath (~16 km) Daily

* Hydrological properties provide an instantaneous rain rate, not accumulated precipitation.

  • Polar Pathfinder - Extended CDR - This CDR provides several ocean-realated data for polar regions such as:
    • Sea ice thickness
    • Surface Albedo
    • Surface Temperature

CDR Period of record Spatial coverage Spatial Resolution Temporal
Sea Surface Temperature - Optimum Interpolation CDR 1981–present Global 0.25 deg, 1440x720 grid Daily
Sea Surface Temperature - Pathfinder CDR 1981–2014 Global 4.6 km satellite swaths twice daily
Polar Pathfinder - Extended CDR 1982–present Polar 25 km EASE grid twice daily
Sea Surface Temperature - WHOI CDR 1988–2021 Global 0.25 deg, 1440x720 grid 3 hourly
