The Ocean Archive System searches our original datasets as they were submitted to us, not individual points or profiles. Title: Temperature profiles from expendable bathythermograph (XBT) casts from the USS R.A. OWENS and other platforms in a world-wide distribution in support of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) project from 1968-08-09 to 1974-08-01 (NCEI Accession 7500699)
Abstract: XBT data were collected from the R.A. OWENS and other platforms in support of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) project. Data were collected by the US Navy; Ships of Opportunity and US Navy; Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) from 09 August 1968 to 01 August 1974. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format.

The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.

Supplementary information: Note: Preliminary metadata for this accession were extracted from a legacy database maintained by the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).

To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis. Metadata were updated in August of 2007.
