This NCEI accession contains discrete profile measurements of total alkalinity, pH on total scale, water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen concentration, nutrients and other chemical and hydrographic parameters obtained during the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa RADPROF 2014 cruise (EXPOCODE 29AH20140804) in the North East Atlantic Ocean from 2014-08-04 to 2014-08-24. The RADPROF project is an annual routine monitoring activity associated with the Finisterre deep section, RADPROF, which contributes to the IEO oceanography observation system, IEOOS since 2003. RADPROF contributes to time series of hydrography, circulation, inorganic biogeochemistry and biology in the slope region of the Galicia-Cantabrian region, passing through the protected area of the Bank of Galicia since 2014. The time series began in 2003 with the VACLAN National Plan project, continued by COVACLAN (2005) and later integrated as a structural program of the IEO under the pseudonym RADPROF. The basic activity is reinforced and expanded thanks to competitive projects of the National Plan such as MODUPLAN (2014), or Interreg EU iFADO (2020), complementary sampling activities using gliders (FinisGlider). Currently RADPROF is basic in Chapter 6 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, as it also would be for the Ocean Acidification and Prevailing Conditions chapter. From 2024 to 2026 it will contribute to the EuroGOSHIP project in support of the improvement of European hydrography. RADPROF is recognized as a GO-SHIP Associated line due to the high density and quality of its thermohaline, circulation and inorganic biogeochemistry data, especially CO2 variables.

  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: ALKALI; Unit: umol/kg; Observation type: Profile (discrete samples); In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: Niskin bottle - transferred to Borosilicate bottle; Analyzing instrument: Potentiometric method; Type of titration: end point; Cell type (open or closed): open; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Samples for total alkalinity determination were collected in 600mL borosilicate bottles and were analysed within one or three days after sampling, no poisoning was needed (Dickson et al., 2007) Samples were analysed following the double end point potentiometric technique by Pérez and Fraga (Mar. Chem., 1987) and Pérez et al. (CC.MM., 2000). Potentiometric titration with Metrohm Titrando system with 5 ml burete and a pH Aquatrode electrode with Pt1000 for temperature measurement Measurements of CO2 Certified Reference Material (CRM) were performed in order to control the accuracy of the alkalinity measurements. The accuracy of the alkalinity measurements (i.e. including sampling errors) was better than ±3 µmol/kg. The precision of the alkalinity measurements was better than ±2 µmol/kg determined from repeated samples of the same sample, although no proper reproducibility analysis was done during the cruise. The pH, which was measured by the electrode, was corrected to obtain the closest mean alkalinity to the CRM. This pH correction was never larger than 0.05. The daily drift of the system was determined by regular measurements of a substandard surface seawater at the beginning and end of each batch of analysis.; Replicate information: The precision of the alkalinity measurements was better than ±2 µmol/kg determined from repeated samples of the same sample, although no proper reproducibility analysis was done during the cruise.; Standardization description: with CRMs; Standardization frequency: every batch; CRM manufacturer: Dickson's lab; Preservation method: dark and cold place; Preservative volume: none; Preservative correction: none; Uncertainty: 3; Quality flag convention: WOCE flags; Method reference: Pérez, F. F. and Fraga, F. (1987) A precise and rapid analytical procedure for alkalinity determination, Mar. Chem., 21, 169–182.; Researcher name: Marta Álvarez; Researcher institution: IEO-CSIC.
  • Parameter or Variable: pH; Abbreviation: PHTS25P0; pH scale: Total scale (T); Observation type: Profile (discrete samples); In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: Niskin bottle transferred to 10 cm cuvette; Analyzing instrument: spectrophotometer SHIMADZU UV2600.; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: pH was measured in cylindrical optical glass 10-cm pathlength cells with a manual spectrophotometric procedure (Clayton and Byrne, 1993 & Dickson et al., 2007) pH is reported in total scale at 25 ºC and at surface pressure. A double beam spectrophotometer was used, SHIMADZU UV2600. All the absorbance measurements were obtained in the thermostatted (25±0.2 ºC) cell compartment of the spectrophotometer. The temperature was controlled with a POLYSCIENCE (12L) thermostatic bath. Unpurified m-cresol purple (2mM Sigma Aldrich) was used and spiked (50 µL) with a repeatable pipette. The double addition applied to the absorbance ratios is the following: Rreal = Rmeasured – (-0.0048·Rm + 0.0033) which was obtained during the HOTMIX cruise a month after pH calculated with the Clayton & Byrne (1993). No other correction applied. The precision was estimated to be better than 0.001 pH units independently of the pH range. No TRIS or CRM were measured for pH; Replicate information: The precision was estimated to be better than 0.001 pH units independently of the pH range.; Standardization description: No TRIS or CRM were measured for pH; Standardization frequency: none; pH standard values: none; Temperature of standardization: none; At what temperature was pH reported: 25; Uncertainty: 0.005; Quality flag convention: WOCE flags; Method reference: Clayton, T. D. and Byrne, R. H. (1993). Spectrophotometric seawater pH measurements: total hydrogen ion concentration scale concentration scale calibration of m-cresol purple and at-sea results, Deep-Sea Res. Iodate additions were done with a multipipette.; Replicate information: The precision was estimated to be better than 1 umol/kg; Uncertainty: 1; Quality flag convention: WOCE flags; Method reference: Langdon, C.
