This study estimated the concentration of microplastics (i.e. plastics measuring less than 5 mm; reported in unit of particles/L) in surface water and snow from multiple environmental setting (i.e., rivers, lakes, creeks, and snow) and locations across Alaska during 2020-03-01 to 2021-07-15. Grab samples were collected using glass or polycarbonate bottles for examination of microplastics. This dataset contains the results from all 62 samples, in a spreadsheet format.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: microplastic concentration (measured); Units: particles/L; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: polycarbonate bottles; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This study collected grab samples (1000 mL) in 1L glass or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) containers from all the locations. This was then transferred to a storage facility at Joseph E. Usibelli Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Prior to analysis, the samples were filtered using 0.45 µm glass fiber filter paper. The filtered microplastics particles were stained with Nile red. Deionized water in 1L glass or HDPE container was used as a control. Eight controls were used in this study. These controls were stored and processed along with the samples. Microplastics identification, quantification and morphological analysis were done with a high-resolution fluorescence microscope.; Data Quality Method: Sample preparation and analysis were performed inside the Water and Environmental Research Center (WERC) laboratory at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This facility is equipped with heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system outfitted with filters to remove less than 1 µ particles which minimizes the microplastics contamination from atmospheric analysis. Nitrile gloves and lab coats were worn during the entire process from sample preparation to analysis on a disinfected and clean benchtop. The control samples were processed and analyzed along with the samples to avoid contamination during the sample processing and analysis steps. Most of the sample preparation steps were performed using cleaned glassware. The study determined the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ)..
