This study estimated the concentration of floating microplastics (i.e. plastics measuring less than 5 mm; reported in unit of counts/km2), mesoplastics (i.e. plastics measuring 5-25 mm; reported in unit of counts/km2), and macroplastics (i.e. plastics measuring greater than 25 mm; reported in unit of counts/km2) around Kuroshio Current, western North Pacific collected from 2014-02-03 to 2014-03-01. These plastics in the surface water were collected using a neuston net (450 µm mesh size) by horizontally towing the net over the sea surface for 10 min at a ship speed of approximately three knots at each station. This dataset contains the results from all 132 surface water samples, in a spreadsheet format.

Processing Steps |
- Parameter or Variable: microplastic concentration (measured); Units: counts/km2; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Neuston net; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The field sampling survey was conducted using a black-colored neuston net (450 μm mesh size) with a frame of 0.75 m in height and 1.3 m in width by horizontally towing the net over the sea surface for 10 min at a ship speed of approximately three knots at each station. In general, sampling continued along meridional (north to south) transects. Plastic debris were immediately preserved in 5 % formalin until further analysis in a laboratory. Floating plastic debris were separately isolated from the settled supernatant of each sample. The same protocol was repeated several times with gradual shaking to ensure that all the plastics were extracted from the samples. The extracted plastics were carefully collected on a nylon mesh of 200 μm in size and gently rinsed with Milli-Q water. After rinsing, the samples were dried at room temperature prior to categorization, counting and measuring the plastic sizes.; Data Quality Method: Quality control measures were adopted to prevent potential cross contamination during the laboratory analyses. Instead of plastic consumables, glass jars and glassware were always used for laboratory analyses. In the laboratory, a clean benchtop working surface was used to prevent contamination. Prior to the analysis, the reusable apparatus and equipment were thoroughly rinsed using tap water under high pressure. Furthermore, the hands of the investigator were thoroughly washed and scrubbed as a quality control measure. During laboratory analysis, the collected plastic samples were gently covered with aluminum foil. The identified plastic samples were further confirmed, and the polymer composition was analyzed using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy in the range of 400–4000 cm-1 at 4 cm-1 resolution and 8 scans. Chemical fingerprints were evaluated by comparing the similarities of the peaks in the infrared absorption spectra of the sample with reference databases (HR Hummel Polymer and Additives, HR Polymer Additives and Plasticizers, HR Spectra Polymer and Plasticizers, and Hummel Polymer Sample Library). The lowest acceptable Hit Quality was set as 70 %..
