This dataset includes surface underway, chemical, meteorological and physical data collected during the Wave Glider GEOMAR-4 sail in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2021-11-14 to 2022-01-14. These data include partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - atmosphere, partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - water, sea surface salinity, sea surface temperature and barometric pressure. A Wave Glider equipped with a VeGas CO2 system, a GPCTD and additional BGC sensors was deployed north of the CVOO site. The deployment served as a test of the VeGas systems performance as a possible cross reference tool for BGC_Argo floats as well as to study eddys in closer proximity to the islands.

  • Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (fCO2) autonomous; Abbreviation: fCO2_Water; Unit: μatm; Observation type: Surface underway; Sampling instrument: water collection with pump; Location of seawater intake: At the keel; Analyzing instrument: VeGAS pCO2; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: SOP05, Dickson, A.G., Sabine, C. (2009), Recommendations for autonomous underway pCO2 measuring systems and data-reduction routines; Equilibrator type: Bubble equilibrator (L-shaped; Sutton et al., 2014); Equilibrator volume: 0.13 L; Is the equilibrator vented or not: Vented; Water flow rate: not applicable; Gas flow rate: 0.25 L/min; How was temperature inside the equilibrator measured: The temperature inside the Equilibrator equals the SST, which was measured with a Glider Payload CTD; How was pressure inside the equilibrator measured: The LI-830's pressure sensor was used to determine the Equilibrator pressure. The measured pressure was multiplied by a system specific factor of 1.00089, which was determined by the manufacturer. This factor is needed, as the measurement is done downstream of the Equilibrator; Drying method for gas: Nafion Dryer; SEA CO2 gas detector manufacturer: Licor; SEA CO2 gas detector model: 830; SEA CO2 gas detector resolution: ±0.7 ppm; SEA CO2 gas detector uncertainty: ±1.5 ppm; Standardization technique: The concentration of the standard gas was determined using a Licor LI7815 by measuring 1 zero and 3 non-zero reference gases supplied by the ICOS calibration lab followed by standard gas of this deployment. Each gas was measured for 15 minutes to ensure a stable mesurement and this cycle was repeated multiple times. Averages of a stable 2 minute period of each ICOS calibration lab gas were used to correct the used standard gas.; Standardization frequency: every 4 hours; Standard gas manufacturer: Deuste Gas Solutions; Standard gas concentration: 501.13 ppm; Standard gas uncertainty: <0.1 ppm; Temperature correction method: Equilibrator Temperature equals SST. No correction applied.; Method reference: SOP05, Dickson, A.G., Sabine, C. L. and Christian, J.R. (2007). Guide to best Practices for Ocean CO2 measurements; Pierrot, D. et al.
