Global ocean Particulate Organic Matter (POM) ratios from 1971-2014 (Biological C:N:P ratios project, Global POM project) (NCEI Accession 0277300)
This dataset contains chemical data collected at UC-Irvine Martiny during deployment Global_POM in the Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Alboran Sea, Andaman Sea or Burma Sea, Arabian Sea, Baltic Sea, Bay of Biscay, Bering Sea, Caribbean Sea, Coral Sea, Davis Strait, East China Sea (Tung Hai), English Channel, Gulf of Guinea, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Indian Ocean, Inland Sea (Seto Naikai), Inner Sea - West Coast Scotland, Ionian Sea, Japan Sea, Java Sea, Labrador Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean Sea - Eastern Basin, Mediterranean Sea - Western Basin, North Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Ross Sea, South Atlantic Ocean, South China Sea (Nan Hai), South Pacific Ocean, Southern Ocean, Tasman Sea, and Tyrrhenian Sea from 1971-03-15 to 2010-07-12. These data include depth, particulate organic Carbon (POC), and particulate organic nitrogen. The instruments used to collect these data include CHN Elemental Analyzer. These data were collected by Michael W. Lomas of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and Adam Martiny of University of California-Irvine as part of the "Biological Controls on the Ocean C:N:P ratios (Biological C:N:P ratios)" and "Concentrations and ratios of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the global ocean (Global POM)" projects and "Dimensions of Biodiversity (Dimensions of Biodiversity)", "Historical Datasets (Historical)", and "Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB)" programs. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2023-01-23.

Supplemental Information | Acquisition Description: Marine particulate organic carbon (POC), nitrogen (PON), and phosphorus (POP) from 70 cruises or time-series during the last 40 years are reported. Nearly all POC and PON measurements were done by collecting seawater particles onto glass-fibers filters (i.e., GF/F) and quantified using a combustion GC-IR based elemental analyzer68. The only exceptions were ‘EUMELI’ and ‘OLIPAC’, where PON was measured using a chemical oxidation technique38. Particulate phosphorus was quantified using the ash-hydrolysis method26,69. We operationally defined station IDs as samples taken within a 1°×1° area on the same day11. The data was gathered by searching available databases (i.e., PANGAEA, BCO-DMO, JGOFS, and IFREMER) as well as published literature. We aggregated all available datasets in order to create the most exhaustive global description of particulate organic nutrients and thus did not exclude any specific cruises or time-series. The only data excluded were samples subjected to a prior manipulation or incubation. |
