Sperm whale skin bulk C and N isotopes from the California Current System, 1972 to 2005 (NCEI Accession 0277282)

This dataset contains chemical data collected at UCSC during deployment lab_UCSC_Koch in the North Pacific Ocean from 1972-12-01 to 2005-07-31. These data include d13C measured in biota and d15N measured in biota. The instruments used to collect these data include Isotope-ratio Mass Spectrometer. These data were collected by Matthew D. McCarthy and Paul L. Koch of University of California-Santa Cruz as part of the "A novel approach for evaluating temporal and spatial changes in trophic structure of the mesopelagic eastern Pacific (Sperm Whale SI Ratios)" project. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2023-01-23.

Acquisition Description:
Materials and methods for analysis are described in detail in the Ruiz_Cooly et al (2014). Bulk isotope values were analyzed by continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS; Thermo Finnigan) and standardized relative to Vienna-Pee Belemnite (V-PDB) for carbon and atmospheric N2 for nitrogen. Results are expressed in part per thousand (‰) and standard notation: dHX= [(Rsample/Rstandard)] x 1000, where H is the mass number of the heavy isotope, X is either C or N, and Rsample and Rstandard are the ratio of 13C/12C or 15N/14N in the sample and standard, respectively.
