These data were collected from sediment at two separate ~1000m deep methane seeps on the Cascadia Margin. Sediment cores were collected at the seeps and then at increasing distance from the areas of seepage. This distance is provided in the data set. Sediment plugs were extracted from cores at 3cm intervals. Depth of core indicates the bottom of the depth horizon. Ryzons were inserted at 2cm intervals into adjacently collected cores, and pore water was extracted for Ions, in particular Sulfate and Sulfide. Sediment depth listed is the depth at which the Ryzon was inserted below the surface of the sediment. 0 sediment depth values are from the overlying water collected from the same sediment core. Sediment was also frozen at -80C for later Rare Earth Element (REE) analysis. This sediment was digested in nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid before analysis on the indicated instrument. Sediment depth indicates the depth horizon it came from for REEs, for example 0 for REE equals the 0-1cm fraction and 2 is the 2-3cm sediment fraction.

Output Datasets
Lineage information for: dataset
Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Methane (CH4) (measured); Units: micromole/liter; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer - Picarro G2301; Sampling and Analyzing Method: 3 ml of sediment were preserved in 2ml 10 M NaOH in serum vials, stored upside down and refrigerated until injection on CRDS with a small sample injection module. Instrument was both recently factory calibrated and data were compared to known standard curve..
  • Parameter or Variable: Sulfate (SO4 2-) (measured); Units: ppm; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Integrion Ion Chromatograph; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Porewater was extracted using Ryzons on collected cores and analyzed on an Integrion Ion Chromatograph using an IonPac CS16-4µm, 4 x 250mm column. Data were fit to a standard curve..
  • Parameter or Variable: Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) (measured); Units: micromole/kilogram; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Shimadzu UV-1201S spectrophotometer; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Porewater was extracted from sediment cores using ryzones. 1ml of samples was stabilized using zinc acetate. These stabilized sulfide samples were quantified on a Shimadzu UV-1201S spectrophotometer at 670 nm using a modified version of Cline’s methylene blue method, as described in (Cline, 1969)..
  • Parameter or Variable: Rare Earth Elements (measured); Units: microgram/miligram sediment; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Thermo iCap-Q ICP-MS; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Samples were run on a Thermo iCap-Q ICP-MS on 9/21/2022 at the Keck Collaboratory at Oregon State University. Standards were PACS-2 and JB-1a. These standards were injected throughout the run to ensure negligible drift.; Data Quality Method: Data values are a mean of three replicate analyses for each element in each sample. Minimum detection limit of all REEs was great than 0.32 ng/ml..
