This study was carried out to estimate the microplastics (i.e. plastics measuring less than 5mm, reported in unit of pieces/m^3) concentration in Bulgarian Black Sea coastal waters. Microplastics data was collected from 2017-08-08 to 2017-08-09 aboard SV Rainbow Warrior. Microplastics samples were collected using manta net. This dataset contains the results from all 10 sampling stations, in a spreadsheet format.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: MICROPLASTIC CONCENTRATION (measured); Units: pieces/m3; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Manta net; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This study was conducted during August 2017 in the Black Sea coastal waters between Burgas Bay and Cape Kaliakra, on-board the Greenpeace sailing ship “Rainbow Warrior” as part of their campaign “Free from plastics”. The selected stations were evenly spaced throughout the coastal water bodies along the studied section of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, considering the possible land-based sources of plastic pollution – river mouths and major cities and ports in the area. Ten transects with a manta net (net opening 0.84 × 0.15 m; mesh size 0.3 mm) were carried out, with mean ship speed of 2.68 ± 0.2 km.h−1, mean transect length 0.67 ± 0.05 km, and mean volume of filtered water 84.5 ± 6.3 m3. The net was deployed from the side of the vessel to avoid the wake zone. The manta net was thoroughly washed with fresh water prior to each deployment, removing possible contaminations from previous deployments and from the ship. Samples were collected in glass bottles and frozen at −20 °C until analysis. Plastic items from the whole sample were hand-sorted under a stereomicroscope (Olympus SZ51 with SZ2-ILST stand, range of magnification 8×–40×) and, if necessary, examined under an optical microscope (Olympus BX51TF, range of magnification 40×–1000×). Items were placed in 3% H2O2 to remove adherent organic matter. All dishes used for separation were kept covered to minimize contamination by airborne fibers and filaments.; Data Quality Method: No procedural blanks or aerial controls of microplastics samples were performed during the sampling procedure to estimate the possible microfiber contamination during sampling and analysis. Since the self-contamination can be significant, in order to avoid overestimation of the reported microplastics concentrations, data on microfibers were excluded from the total concentrations..
