Abundances of microplastics concentrations collected from R/V Mediterranean Explorer in the oligotrophic Israeli Mediterranean coastal waters from 2013-07-25 to 2015-05-18 (NCEI Accession 0260245)

This study estimated the seasonal abundances of sea surface microplastics (i.e. plastics measuring 0.3mm- 5mm, reported in unit of pieces/m^3) at 17 sites along the Israeli Mediterranean coastal waters from 2013-07-25 to 2015-05-18. Data was collected using a manta net. This dataset contains the results from all 108 net tows, in a spreadsheet format. Tows were conducted for 15 minutes along shore at an average cruising speed of 2 knots.

Purpose	These microplastics concentration data were collected in order to determine the abundance of microplastics in the oligotrophic Israeli Mediterranean coastal waters.

Processing Steps	Parameter or Variable: MICROPLASTIC CONCENTRATION (measured); Units: pieces/m3; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Manta net; Sampling and Analyzing Method: A total of 108 sea surface samples were taken from 17 sites along the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Sampling was carried out once in each season, from summer 2013 until spring 2015. Each sampling consisted of a 15-minute along-shore (either northward or southward, along the 10 m isobath) manta net tow from the R/V Mediterranean Explorer, at an average speed of 2 knots. The manta net (333 μm mesh size) had a rectangular opening of 0.2 × 0.6m that sampled the upper 10 cm of the water column; it was equipped with a Hydrobios 483,110 mechanical flowmeter to quantify the volume of water sampled. The sampled material was fixed in 4% formalin for visual inspection and in order to preserve the biota collected in these samples. The plastic particles in the samples were inspected and sorted in the laboratory, initially by means of a magnifying glass and subsequently by a Motic SMZ171 stereo microscope and a Moticam3 adjustable camera and Canon Power Shot A580 to photograph and examine the particles at higher magnification.; Data Quality Method: In order to determine whether tow direction (north to south vs. south to north and cross-shore vs. alongshore) may have affected the results, three replicate manta tows for all four directions were carried out, at two sites, and abundances were compared..
