Floating microplastics concentration collected from RV Angeles Alvarino and RV IV Lluerna in the Western Mediterranean Sea from 2015-03-17 to 2015-06-05 (NCEI Accession 0253140)

This study estimated the load of floating microplastics in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Data was collected aboard RV Angeles Alvarino and RV IV Lluerna using manta trawl net. This dataset contains the results from all 21 net tows, in a spreadsheet format. Tows were conducted for 15–20 min at an average cruising speed of 3 knots (1.5ms−1). The study found an average microplastic concentrations of 0.410 ± 0.361 pieces/m3.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: MICROPLASTIC CONCENTRATION (measured); Units: pieces/m3; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Manta net; Sampling and Analyzing Method: A total of 21 net tows were performed for 15–20 min at an average cruising speed of 3 knots (1.5ms−1). Samples were collected using a 0.61×0.25m mouth opening and 335 μm mesh manta trawl net, which was deployed ~2m from the ship's hull by using a side boom to avoid ship-based contamination. An average area of 824 m2 per tow at an average volumetric water flow rate of 0.2 m3 s−1 was sampled. The net was rinsed with filtered seawater after each tow in order to ensure that all plastic debris were collected and quantified. All samples were transferred into glass jars and fixed with 3% buffered formalin solution prior to their storage in a cool place onboard the vessel and in the laboratory preceding microplastic extraction. Plastic concentrations were calculated by dividing the number or weight of the collected plastic particles by the towed area.; Data Quality Method: During the sampling procedure, all materials used (plastic and non-plastic) were checked and pre-rinsed with filtered seawater to remove any additional plastic particle. Plastic fibers were excluded from analysis to prevent any possible bias by airborne contamination..
