This dataset includes surface underway, chemical, meteorological and physical data collected during the M/V Atlantic Sail Ships of Opportunity (SOOP) cruises in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2020-03-10 to 2020-06-17. These data include partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - atmosphere, partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - water, sea surface salinity, sea surface temperature and barometric pressure. The instruments used to collect these data include Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer. GEOMAR operates surface ocean pCO2 measurements in the sub-polar North Atlantic since 2002 on different ships of opportunities (SOOP lines). The measurements are now embedded in the frame work of the European infrastructure "Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS)".

  • Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (SST, 100hum) [uatm]; Abbreviation: pCO2 (SST, 100hum) [uatm]; Unit: partial pressure of CO2 in seawater at SST and 100% humidity in µatm; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ; Analyzing instrument: General Oceanics GO pCO2 system; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: A General Oceanics pCO2 system (model 8050) was used for pCO2 measurements. The system is described in detail in Pierrot (2009) and the whole setup is described in Steinhoff (2010). Surface water is pumped continuously (by a torque flow pump) from the intake to the equilibrator. The equilibrator contains a water spray head, and as the water flows through it the dissolved CO2 equilibrates with the headspace. The headspace is dried and xCO2 is determined by an infrared sensor. Calculations were performed following Pierrot (2009) and are described in detail in Steinhoff (2010). Calculations were performed following Pierrot (2009, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr2.2008.12.005) and are described in detail in Steinhoff (2010, https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:gbv:8-diss-57043). The water is drawn directly from teh loer sea chest at ca. 11m depth. A temperature sensor (SBE38) is installed close to the sea chest. The wtaer is pumped throug ca. 10 m of a 1" copper pipe using a torque flow pump entering a manifold with an SBE21 (temperature and salinity). From there a 1 m long 1/2" hose connects to the GO sstem. The equilibrator pressure is measured using a differential pressure sensor (inside/outside equilibrator) and an absolute pressure sensor next to the equilibrator. The air inlet is located ca. 35 m above sea level next to the ship's funnel and teh air line is constanltly flushed with atmospheric air. Equilibrator temperature is measured by a Fluke Hart 1523, wich is known to be stable over a longer period. It was calibrated in Nov. 2019. The equilibrator is open to the atmosphere. Since no absolute pressure sensor was installed the pressure from the atmospheric pressure sensor was used. A SETRA difference pressure sensor is attached to the equilibrator. The temperature correction between equilibrator temperature and intake temperature was done following Takahashi et al. (1993). Seasonal variation of CO2 and nutrients in the high-latitude Surface Oceans: A comparative study.; Method reference: SOP05, Dickson, A.G., Sabine, C. L. and Christian, J.R. (2007). Guide to best Practices for Ocean CO2 measurements; Pierrot, D. et al. (2009), Recommendations for autonomous underway pCO2 measuring systems and data-reduction routines.
