This dataset includes discrete profile data collected during the R/V Rachel Carson cruises 201605CB, 201606CB, 201608CB, 201610CB (EXPOCODEs 32RC20160504, 32RC20160606, 32RC20160808, 32RC20161010) in the Chesapeake Bay and North Atlantic Ocean from 2016-05-04 to 2016-10-13. These data include dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA), temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and calcium ion measured from discrete bottles. The data are from the first bay-wide observational study of the main stem of the Chesapeake Bay. Four bay-wide cruises were conducted in the Chesapeake Bay on R/V Rachel Carson on May 4–6, June 6–10, August 8–12, and October 10–13, 2016, and one bay-wide cruise was on a commercial boat on February 21–22, 2019. The surface underway data from these cruises are archived at NCEI as Accession 0191507. The field research was supported by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA (NA15NOS4780190).

  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: DIC_UMOL_KG; Unit: micro-mol/kg; Observation type: profile; Measured or calculated: measured; Sampling instrument: submersible pump; Analyzing instrument: DIC analyzer AS-C3, Apollo Scitech, USA; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: We used a YSI 6600 attached to a submersible pump to obtain profiles of temperature, salinity, and O2. Water was pumped from 2-7 depths to the deck for sampling, depending on the number of distinct water masses observed. For each depth, a water sample was preserved in a 250 mL borosilicate glass bottle with 50 uL saturated HgCl2 solution for DIC analysis. For DIC, a 1 mL sample was acidified and the extracted CO2 gas was subsequently quantified with an infrared CO2 detector within one week after the cruise using a DIC analyzer (AS-C3, Apollo Scitech, USA) (Huang et al. 2012).; Replicate information: 6% of the samples with duplicate sampling; Standardization description: Using three injection volumes (0.5, 0.7, 0.9 mL) of CRM to creat a working cruve that covers the range of samples; Standardization frequency: two or three times per day; CRM manufacturer: Andrew Dickson's lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Preservation method: saturated solution of mercury(II) chloride; Preservative volume: 50 uL saturated HgCl2 solution was added to 250 mL DIC sample; Preservative correction: multiply by the volume correction factor 250/(250-0.05); Uncertainty: ± 2 µmol/kg; Quality flag convention: 2=good, 3=questionable; Method reference: Huang, W.
