NCCOS mapping: seafloor mapping products for Kachemak Bay, Cook Inlet, AK, from 2005-07-06 to 2017-07-19 (NCEI Accession 0209109)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset contains seafloor mapping data from hydrographic multibeam sonar surveys, a thematic benthic habitat map created from these multibeam sonar surveys, and georeferenced benthic photographs and video clips, all collected in and around Kachemak Bay, Alaska. The multibeam dataset contains the bathymetric data collected by NOAA Ship Fairweather and NOAA Ship Rainier in the summers of 2008 and 2009. Underwater videos for ground validation were acquired during the field missions of July 2016 and July 2017 aboard R/V Edgecumbe. An additional seagrass map, generated by manual interpretation of air photos captured in 2005, is also included, as are the air photos.

Supplemental Information
In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number.
Purpose Kachemak Bay estuarine and marine habitats are used by halibut, other groundfish, all five species of Pacific salmon, and shellfish (crab and bivalves). These species support commercial, recreational and subsistence harvests. Kachemak Bay is also used by marine mammal and seabird species under NOAA (whales, seals, sea lions) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) (sea otters, seabirds) management. Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet have experienced past crashes and lack of recovery in crab and herring populations and are currently experiencing significant declines in halibut, king salmon and clam populations which have reduced harvests and adversely affected the local economy and subsistence use. Improved geospatial data on benthic and intertidal habitats is needed by FWS and Alaska Department of Fish and Game resource managers, for NOAA and Alaska Department of Natural Resources permit decisions, and for U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) environmental analysis needs for newly proposed oil and gas lease sales in the region. Before this project, there were no subtidal benthic habitat maps of Kachemak Bay to support essential fish habitat and other resource management needs. The main objectives of this NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) project were to produce the first benthic habitat map for the area, and assess, and transition existing data into an accessible map interface to inform management decisions while preparing the users in the area for future issues. The corrected bathymetry base surface was used to interpret the seafloor topography habitat types.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: BATHYMETRY (measured); Units: meter; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: multibeam sonar; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Measurement of the seabed elevation. The data were collected using multibeam echosounders (MBES; Reson 7125, 8101, and 8125) and processed by NOS using Caris software. The raw sounding and beam form were combined to create a mosaic of the survey area. Data were manually edited for constantly of intensity over the two cruise years and sampling systems.; Data Quality Method: The minimum standards for multibeam echo sounder sonar system resolution are set forth under 1a in the "IHO Standards for Hydrographic Surveys", 2008. The surfaces produced in CARIS that were used for producing BAGs and GeoTIFFs use the IHO S-44 Special Order..
  • Parameter or Variable: HABITAT - BENTHIC (calculated); Units: none; Observation Category: model output; Sampling Instrument: Models/Analyses > Data Analysis > Environmental Modeling; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This data set is a thematic map, a benthic habitat classification. Multibeam echosounder data was classified into numerous subclasses of unconsolidated sediment and rock. The benthic habitat map was generated using a combination of automated image processing techniques in the eCognition software package and heads up, on-screen editing. Underwater video collected during field missions in July 2016 and July 2017 was used as training data to create the map.; Data Quality Method: The classification was checked against the 510 underwater videos collected in 2016 and 2017 to ensure the classification corresponded as closely as possible to the benthos identified in the videos..
  • Parameter or Variable: Seagrass Classification (calculated); Units: none; Observation Category: model output; Sampling Instrument: Models/Analyses > Data Analysis > Environmental Modeling; Sampling and Analyzing Method: This data set is a thematic map, a classification of seagrass occurrence. Aerial photographs were interpreted, classifying seagrass as dense or patchy. Underwater video, and data collected on foot during low tides during field missions in June and August 2005 was used as training data to create the map.; Data Quality Method: The classification was checked against the 224 underwater videos collected in 2005 to ensure the classification corresponded as closely as possible to the benthos identified in the videos..
