Marine animal satellite telemetry location and profile data from the U.S. Animal Telemetry Network (ATN)
This dataset contains satellite telemetry location and profile data collected from satellite-linked tags deployed on marine animals and contributed by organizations that are part of the U.S. Animal Telemetry Network (ATN). The data were submitted to the U.S. Animal Telemetry Network (ATN) Data Assembly Center, and were aggregated, managed, and displayed through the ATN data portal, hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) office. A subset of individual deployments were made available as netCDF files to the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) for ATN by Axiom Data Science.

Purpose | The movements, behaviors, physiological status, and environmental interactions of marine animals are a fundamental element of marine ecosystem dynamics. Telemetry, the use of electronic tag technology to study animals, is a critical tool for monitoring marine ecosystems and is especially useful in filling in spatial and temporal data gaps. Archiving the ATN collection of high-quality, standardized observations provides a valuable resource that is accessible and available to the public. |
