During ebb tides, a plankton net (300 μm mesh, 3m long and 0.6m diameter) was towed on the side of the boat and trawled at the surface for approximately 10 min at an average speed of 4 km/h. A flowmeter fitted at the mouth of the net allowed calculation of the total water volume filtered. The material retained by the net was transferred in the field to pre-cleaned flasks and subsequently processed in the laboratory. The microplastics (MPs) with sizes<5mm were isolated in the laboratory by wet sieving using two meshes (355 μm in the bottom and 4.75mm in the top). After drying, all the solid material contained in the 355 μm mesh screen was transferred to a beaker and treated with hydrogen peroxide at 35% for removal of organic matter, following the procedure by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). In the next step, the samples were filtered in 300 μm mesh and the particles retained in the sieve were quantified by gravimetric analysis and examined manually with the aid of a stereoscopic binocular loupe with LED illumination and magnification of up to 35 times. Subsequently, each separate category was subjected to image capture in a stereomicroscopic optical microscope with AxioCam Cc1camera coupled for analysis of the surface of the material and for each image obtained a digital processing of threshold segmentation was applied that allowed discriminating pixels of MPs particles and background of the image. This information was processed by a developed software that allowed to quantify all particles of the image as well as to inform measurement of its major axis.; Data Quality Method: 35 particles considered representative from each category of MPs were analyzed by Fourier transformed infrared absorption spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FT-IR-ATR; ˃1 mm) to determine polymers chemical identity. In selected samples, the composition of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents was also determined by elemental analysis (Flash EA1112, Thermo)..
