CTD profile data (128 casts) were collected in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas from the Fishing Vessel Ocean Starr (OS1701 Legs 1,2,3), August 1 to October 4, 2017). The cruise was part of the Arctic Integrated Ecosystem Survey (Arctic IES) funded as part of the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) Arctic Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (Arctic IERP). The program and research on this expedition were sponsored by NPRB and the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management (BOEM), with in-kind support by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These data contribute to understanding how reductions in Arctic sea ice and associated changes in the physical environment influence the flow of energy through the ecosystems of the two Seas. The physical data are part of a wider range of data collected towards this effort. Notably, there was no sea ice present in the northern regions during the survey area as compared to surveys that occurred during 2012 and 2013 (see cruise report). CTD data and water samples were collected by NOAA, PMEL Ecosystems & Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI). This data set contains 1-meter-averaged profile data. Purpose |
The objective of this study and data collection is to understand how reductions in Arctic sea ice and associated changes in the physical environment influence the flow of energy through the ecosystems of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The larger study included two research expeditions in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas during late summer and early fall 2017 (os17-01) and 2019 (os1901, August-October, 2019). The surveys take measurements of the: 1) physical environment (temperature, salinity, nutrients); 2) seasonal composition, distribution and production of phytoplankton; 3) distribution and standing stocks of zooplankton; 4) assemblages, distributions, abundances, size, diet, and fitness of larval, early juvenile, and adult fishes; and 5) distribution and relative abundances of seabirds and marine mammals. This subset of Arctic IES measurements are intended to quantify the physical environments. Year-round biophysical moorings will provide temporal context for these measurements as well as for fish movement and marine mammal calls. |
