browse graphicPreview graphic
This data package contains data measured using an autonomous total alkalinity titrator on board the NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow cruises in 2021. Data were collected from the ship's underway seawater supply during the seven hydrographic surveys, from March 12 to November 3, 2021. Spatial data coverage extends from the Gulf of Maine to Cape Hatteras. This effort was part of the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) grant entitled "Optimizing Ocean Acidification Observations for Model Parameterization in the Coupled Slope Water". Along with total alkalinity, corresponding temperature and salinity measurements are included. Measurements of pCO2 taken on these cruises are available from NOAA's AOML.

  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Unit: micromoles per kilogram; Observation type: surface underway; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: CONTROS HydroFIA® TA; Analyzing instrument: CONTROS HydroFIA® TA; Type of titration: single acid addition; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: An inline filter (0.2 µm) with small 50 mL overflow reservoir for filtered seawater was supplied with the ship's underway seawater supply. The HydroFIA TA then drew the sample from the reservoir into the instrument for analysis. The HydroFIA TA instrument performed a single-point titration of seawater with 0.1N hydrochloric acid (HCl), using bromocresol green (BCG) as the indicator for spectrophotometric pH detection.; Replicate information: 2.0 µmol/kg, calculated as one standard deviation of triplicate measurements of certified reference material; Standardization description: The instrument was calibrated using certified reference material (CRM) obtained from Dr. Andrew Dickson at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The instrument was calibrated before each cruise. For more details regarding instrument deployment and performance, see Hunt et al. (2021, Marine Chemistry 232, 103960). CRM Batch 185 was used during these cruises.; CRM manufacturer: Dr. Andrew Dickson, Scripps Institute of Oceanography; CRM batch number: 185; Preservation method: none; Preservative volume: none; Preservative correction: none; Uncertainty: 2.3±13; Method reference: Aßmann, S., Frank, C., Petersen, W., Körtzinger, A., 2013.
