abstract: The ChukSA climatology is comprised of shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (SADCP) ocean velocity datasets collected by research vessels while working in, or transiting through, the Chukchi Sea region. SADCP datasets included in the climatology have received high- level post-processing, including manual editing and removal of estimated barotropic tides, and have been combined into a unique dataset of direct ocean velocity measurements. As of early 2023, ChukSA includes 95 datasets from 57 cruises by six ships spanning 16 years since 2002. To create the ChukSA climatology, the creators searched for SADCP datasets with cruise tracks that fell within the specified region of 65°-75° N and 170°-150° W. This was done by contacting colleagues and researchers who regularly work in the Chukchi region and by reaching out to the UNOLS Rolling Deck Repository (R2R) team, which archives cruise metadata and data from research vessels, to collect SADCP datasets from research missions as well as transits. Please see below for the original dataset citations and acknowledgements. The original datasets identified were retrieved in a variety of formats (from varying SADCP systems/manufacturers), with a wide range of post-processing completed. Frank Bahr (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) reviewed each dataset identified and assessed the need for post-processing. When necessary, appropriate post-processing methods were applied to datasets to ensure that all entries in the climatology were appropriate for climatological analysis. Post-processing methods are summarized in 'ChukSA_readme_final.pdf', with extensive details for each dataset available in a separate document titled ‘ChukSA_Appendix_A.pdf’. Final velocity measurements included in ChukSA are high quality and ready for use by the community. Data are in NetCDF.

description: Parameter or Variable: Ocean velocity profiles (measured); Units: m/s; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (SADCP); Sampling and Analyzing Method: The ChukSA climatology is comprised of shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (SADCP) ocean velocity datasets collected by research vessels while working in, or transiting through, the Chukchi Sea region. To create the ChukSA climatology, the creators searched for SADCP datasets with cruise tracks that fell within the specified region of 65°-75° N and 170°-150° W. This was done by contacting colleagues and researchers who regularly work in the Chukchi region and by reaching out to the UNOLS Rolling Deck Repository (R2R) team, which archives cruise metadata and data from research vessels, to collect SADCP datasets from research missions as well as transits. The majority of datasets were originally produced with the University of Hawaii Data Acquisition System (UHDAS) (Firing and Hummon, 2010). This processing system converts ship-relative current measurements provided by hardware into estimates of earth-relative water velocity, applies automated preliminary editing, and creates time-averaged data files.; Data Quality Method: The original datasets identified were retrieved in a variety of formats (from varying SADCP systems/manufacturers), with a wide range of post-processing completed. Frank Bahr (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) reviewed each dataset identified and assessed the need for post-processing. When necessary, appropriate post-processing methods were applied to datasets to ensure that all entries in the climatology were appropriate for climatological analysis. description: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
