abstract: The data in this file come from a survey of adult residents in Puerto Rico. The survey was conducted for a random stratified sample of households on the main island of Puerto Rico, as well as the islands of Culebra and Vieques, from January 8 to November 4, 2022. These data are the second round of data collection assessing Puerto Rico residents’ socioeconomic characteristics, human use patterns, and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of coral reefs and coral reef management. These data are also used to compare changes in Puerto Rico residents’ socioeconomic characteristics since the first round of monitoring that occurred in 2015 in Puerto Rico. Data were collected through a face to face interview method or the option to complete an online form, and the total sample size for completed surveys was 980 respondents. Survey weights were created to adjust for the sample design and non-response, and then calibrated using 2020 US Census data so that the weighted dataset is representative of Puerto Rico’s resident population.
purpose: The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long-term approach to provide an ecosystem perspective via monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP is intended to coordinate various Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis.

description: Parameter or Variable: HUMAN ACTIVITY (measured); Units: multiple; Observation Category: other; Sampling Instrument: documentation only - no instrument type; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The project team implemented a three-stage stratified random cluster sampling design with four strata: coastal north, coastal south, inland (on the mainland) and island areas (Culebra and Vieques). Households were then selected from within each of the selected clusters from each of the four strata using a random starting point. One adult from within each selected household was then selected to participate in the survey. Field teams conducted in-person surveys with household respondents as well as dropped off postcards that provided the household with a unique code should they want to complete the survey online. Data collection began on January 28th, 2022 and continued until the landfall of Hurricane Fiona on September 18th, 2022. Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona, data collection paused from September 18th until October 21st. Data collection resumed on October 22nd with a visit to Vieques. Data collection concluded on November 4th, 2022 with the visit to Culebra. In total, 5,250 households were visited during the data collection effort. A total of 980 surveys were completed (95% in Spanish), yielding an overall response rate of 22%. Data were weighted to account for sample design and non-response, and then calibrated based on key variables (age category, gender, education, race, and household income) within each stratum to ensure data were representative of the adult population of Puerto Rico..
