abstract: This dataset contains physical data collected on ARSV Laurence M. Gould, R/V Polarstern, and Umitaka-Maru during cruises ANT-XXVII-2, LMG1110, and UM-08-09 in the Indian Ocean, South Atlantic Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, and Southern Ocean from 2009-01-12 to 2011-12-02. These data include salinity calculated from CTD primary sensors and water temperature. The instruments used to collect these data include Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl, MOCNESS1, and Midwater Trawl. These data were collected by Dr Diana Payne of Connecticut Sea Grant and Dr Ann Bucklin and Dr Rachel J. O'Neill of University of Connecticut as part of the "Population ecology of Salpa thompsoni based on molecular indicators (Salp_Antarctic)" project. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2018-02-23. The following is the text of the dataset description provided by BCO-DMO: scientific sampling event log Dataset Description: This dataset is a log of the Salpa thompsoni specimens used for genomics/transcriptomics. Reported parameters include cruise id, region, season and area, location, number of samples collected, temperature, salinity, depth range of the samples, and the depth of the water at the collection site. The letters in MOCNESS refer to the specific improvements: it's a Multiple Opening and Closing Net, with an Environmental Sensing System. As MOCNESS tows behind a research ship, each net can be opened and shut independently so that it samples a discrete patch of water. The researcher chooses exactly when by using the environmental sensing system. This is an array of sensors mounted on the instrument frame that relays water conditions up to the ship in real time. The data also help researchers match what they find in their sample to the physical properties of the seawater.
