Harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) abundance survey conducted during visual observations from a vessel platform in the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center Cetacean Assessment and Ecology Program from 2019-07-19 to 2019-08-12 (NCEI Accession 0277244)
This dataset includes visual line transect survey data collected in the summer of 2019 in the waters of Southeast Alaska. The survey was designed for updating the abundance estimate of harbor porpoise within the inland waters of Southeast Alaska, although all marine mammal sightings were recorded.

Purpose | Two demographically independent populations of harbor porpoise are currently recognized in Southeast Alaska. Bycatch of porpoises in the salmon drift gillnet fisheries is suspected to occur regularly. The purpose of this ship survey was to assess distribution of harbor porpoise in inland waters of SEAK, including areas never previously surveyed by the MML cruises, and to collect visual line transect survey data to compute a new estimate of abundance. Harbor porpoises are highly vulnerable to mortality in gillnets, therefore monitoring abundance and bycatch is important for evaluating the potential impact of fisheries on this species in Southeast Alaska. |
