NCCOS Mapping: lakebed maps and associated geospatial data of Wisconsin - Lake Superior, 2020-07-25 to 2022-03-01 (NCEI Accession 0252121)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset includes lakebed maps and associated geospatial data in Lake Superior, offshore the Wisconsin Bayfield Peninsula and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Associated data include remotely sensed lakebed imagery (e.g., multibeam bathymetry, backscatter) and underwater videos. The dataset includes original data collections and modeled data. Original data collection spans the years 2020 to 2021, and lakebed models and derived maps were developed in 2022.

Supplemental Information
These data were developed with funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and support restoration of the Great Lakes. This dataset was the product of a partnership among the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, the Office for Coastal Management, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory and the National Park Service.
Purpose These data were created to support management decisions intended to address multiple littoral issues including increases in coastal erosion and sedimentation, degradation of native fish habitat, coastal development, water quality changes, harmful algal blooms, and species invasions. The intended users of these maps are lake managers and scientists working on restoring the Great Lakes.
Use Limitations

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Substrate (measured); Units: percent; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Models/Analyses > Data Analysis > Environmental Modeling; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Substrate and biotic coverages were measured in the field of an underwater drop camera. Measurements were made by estimating the proportion of the lakebed with each data type over a 30 second time period (occasionally less when multiple habitats were traversed).; Data Quality Method: Results were presented to two outside reviewers.
