abstract: This dataset contains fish haul and specimen information collected during the Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) research cruise in 2017. During the cruise, demersal fishes were collected with a plump-staff beam trawl, identified to species, and their length was measured while onboard. A subset of specimens was frozen or preserved in ethanol for laboratory analyses to contribute to this and other datasets. Juvenile and pelagic fishes were also captured with an Isaac-Kidd midwater trawl. The final dataset consists of 3 comma separated values files (csv), one lookup table as a comma separated values file (csv), and two ISO 19110/19115 metadata records in xml form. The data files are presented in a table structure using Darwin Core OBIS-GBIF form (https://obis.org/manual/dataformat/#emof), using Darwin Core term names as column names and in keeping with that metadata standard (https://dwc.tdwg.org/). They are: AMBON2017_fish_Event_DWC.csv, AMBON2017_fish_MoF_DWC.csv, AMBON2017_fish_Occurrence_DWC.csv. This dataset also contains the file AMBON2017_Fish_data_HaulInfo_lookupTable.csv, describing details of sampling efforts such as stations and date and comments/notes of sampling efforts.
purpose: The goal of the Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) project is to demonstrate and build an operational marine biodiversity observing network from microbes to whales, integrating diversity levels from genetic to organismal. AMBON is funded through the National Ocean Partnership Program, with contributions from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management (BOEM), Shell Exploration and Production Company, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The AMBON field region is located on the Chukchi Sea continental shelf in the US Arctic as a region exposed to climatic changes and anthropogenic influences. AMBON is composed of a team of multi-institutional and multi-sector partners active in a variety of Arctic biodiversity observing programs and covering disciplines ranging from genetic to organismal to ecosystem. In regards to this particular dataset, fish are typically small in the Chukchi Sea, but diversity and abundance can be high and they play important roles in linking lower trophic levels to seabird and marine mammal predators.

The PSBTA was deployed from the stern at 30 m/min with a ratio of 2-3 m of towing cable to 1 m of water depth. It was towed at approximately 1.5-2.0 kt speed for approximately 4-5 minutes. Pelagic fishes were collected using an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl (IKMT), which targeted from the surface to approximately 10 m above the substrate. The IKMT had 3 mm mesh throughout the body and codend with mouth dimensions of 1.5 m wide by 1.8 m high. A rigid diving vane kept the mouth of the net open during towing and exerted a depressing force to stabilize the net vertically. The IKMT was deployed from the stern and towed at approximately 3.5-4.0 kt in a double oblique tow. During the haul, the towing cable was continuously released or retrieved at the rate of approximately 30 m/min. Most fishes were frozen in seawater for transport to the UAF Fisheries Oceanography Laboratory in Fairbanks, AK. These specimens will be available for stable isotope and other potential analyses in the future. Juvenile fishes and very small specimens were combined from a from each station and preserved in molecular-grade 70% ethanol, resulting in one jar of specimens from stations where small fish were collected. These data and their sampling are preresented across multiple columns in these files. These correspond with Darwin Core terms. (See references).
