This data package contains measurements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in muscle tissue of several fish species including Red Snapper and Yellowedge Grouper collected aboard R/V Justo Sierra and R/V Weatherbird II cruises in the southern Gulf of Mexico from 2010-06-05 to 2016-08-19. Fish species were caught in Campeche Bay and Yucatan Shelf in the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico using demersal longline sampling gear. The total concentration of PAHs in muscle tissue was analyzed with an Agilent gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) 6890N/5973MS after PAH was extracted from tissue with a 1:1. hexane:methylene chloride solvent. Livers of red snappers were examined for hepatic parenchymal changes. The dataset includes the cruise information, date and location of sample collection sites, the common and the scientific name of the fish species examined, total PAH concentration, and the classification and the exact description of the anomaly.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (measured); Units: μg/kg dry weight; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS); Sampling and Analyzing Method: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted with a mixed solvent solution (hexane: dichloromethane, 1:1) using an ASE 300 accelerated solvent extractor. The sample was concentrated and purified in a chromatographic column packed with sulfite, silica, alumina and granulated copper. Purified extracts were then analyzed with a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass selective detector, Agilent Technologies GC-MS 6890N/5973MS, equipped with an autosampler and quadrupole electronic impact..
  • Parameter or Variable: FISH SPECIES (measured); Units: n/a; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: DEMERSAL TRAWL; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Fishes were collected using demersal longline sampling gear..
  • Parameter or Variable: Liver Anomalies (measured); Units: n/a; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Demersal longline; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Red snapper samples were caught in Campeche Bay and Yucatan Shelf using demersal longline sampling gear. At each station, a 544 kg test monofilament mainline was deployed, with a mean of 433 baited hooks per set. Livers of red snappers were examined for hepatic parenchymal changes. The liver is classified as H = healthy and D = damaged, and the description of the anomaly is provided within the data file..
