        abstract:  This dataset contains nutrient, chlorophyll, oxygen, and others taken by CTD water samples from the USCGC Healy, cruise HE1702, in the Bering and Chukchi Seas, and the Arctic Ocean. Discrete water samples from 141 CTD casts were collected in the Chukchi Sea from US Coast Guard Cutter Healy (HE1702, August 26 to September 15, 2017) as part of the 2017 Distributed Biological Observatory – Northern Chukchi Integrated Study (DBO-NCIS). The goal of DBO-NCIS was to document and understand ongoing changes to the Pacific-Arctic ecosystem in light of the changing physical drivers. Sampling and transects on this research cruise were along standard DBO lines in areas 1, 3, 4 and 5. Nutrients and chlorophyll samples were collected at all process stations in support of benthic studies and net tows. A total of 410 nutrient samples were collected, filtered, and stored frozen at -80 degrees C. They were processed post-cruise at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) for determination of nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, silicate and phosphate concentrations. Total chlorophyll was collected at 71 stations at standard depths of surface, 10 m, 20 m, 30 m, 40 m, and 50 m or bottom depth when stations were shallower than any standard depth. Samples were filtered through GF/F glass fiber filters under low vacuum, and the filters were stored frozen at -80 degrees C. Samples were analyzed at NOAA/PMEL. For calibration of the CTD oxygen probe, 48 samples were samples collected for dissolved oxygen. See data type descriptions for more processing details. Data have been submitted in csv format with a 1-line header defining columns. Related profile data from CTD instruments were processed and are available at WHOI.
        purpose:  Data were collected as part of the 2017 Distributed Biological Observatory – Northern Chukchi Integrated Study (DBO-NCIS). The goal of DBO-NCIS was to document and understand ongoing changes to the Pacific-Arctic ecosystem in light of the changing physical drivers. The main objectives for the 2017 cruise were (1) to occupy DBO lines 3-5 in the Chukchi Sea with an extensive suite of water column and benthic measurements; and (2) to carry out a process study of the northeastern Chukchi shelf designed to understand the physical-biological links that result in the biological hot spots in this region.

At each CTD location, Niskin bottles were fired at desired depths on the upcast to collect water. Samples were collected in 50 ml high-density polyethylene bottles that were rinsed first with 10% HCl prior to each station, and rinsed at least three times with Niskin sea water before filling. Some samples were refrigerated for 3-12 hours prior to analysis, and some frozen for later analysis.
