abstract: This dataset includes a variety of environmental variables from surface water of five wetland sites (three natural and two restored), and the effluent of three wastewater treatment plants. Potential denitrification rates were also measured in the surface sediments of the five wetlands from the Texas Coastal Bend. The data was collected over a course of 18 months from late 2018 to early 2020. The variables include pH, water temperature (°C), salinity (psu), dissolved oxygen (mg/L), nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium concentrations (µM), d15N-NH4, d15N-NO3, d15N-NO2 (per mille), dissolved N2O, CO2, and CH4 (µM), and potential denitrification rates from wetland sediments (kg N·ha^-2·yr^-1).
purpose: This dataset is available to the public for a wide variety of uses including scientific research and analysis.

description: Parameter or Variable: Potential Denitrification Rate (calculated); Units: kg N·ha^-2·yr^-1; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Gas Chromatograph; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Potential denitrification was measured using the acetylene blocking method (Groffman and Tiedje 1989). Bulk sediments in a slurry were mixed in a serum bottle and sealed, then treated with the addition of wastewater high in nitrate and acetylene gas. Headspace was measured on the GC fixed with an ECD using 2 mL injections. The production of N2O was measured once per hour for six hours. Denitrification rates were calculated by the rate of N2O accumulation over time (Groffman and Tiedje 1989). Rates were corrected using Henry’s Law Constant for N2O for dissolved gas in the aqueous layer in the serum bottle (Sander 1999; Lindau et al., 2008). The rate of denitrification was then converted to kg N·ha-2·yr-1 using the equation from Rolston (1986) and Lindau et al. (2008).
