This dataset includes chemical, meteorological, physical and time series data collected from Mooring PIRATA_6S8E in the South Atlantic Ocean from 2018-03-15 to 2019-07-05. These data include partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide - water, sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, and barometric pressure. The instruments used to collect these data include Bubble type equilibrator for autonomous carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement and Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer. The Global CO2 Time-series and Moorings Project involves international groups from 18 countries who have mounted sensors on moored buoys to provide high resolution time-series measurements of atmospheric boundary layer and surface ocean CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The CO2 Time-series and Moorings Project is coordinated by UNESCO International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP).

  • Parameter or Variable: FCO2_WAT; Abbreviation: FCO2_WAT; Unit: UATM; Controlled vocabulary name: partial pressure of carbon dioxide - water; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The measurement principle for CO2 is to flow seawater across a gas permeable membrane filled with pH sensitive dye. The CO2 will diffuse across the membrane until the fugacity of CO2 in the dye reaches that of the seawater. The fugacity of CO2 is deduced from the pH of the dye solution. The pH is determined by the change in ratio of optical absorbance at two wavelengths (596 nm and 434 nm) corresponding to the maximum absorbance of the acid and conjugate base of the dye and are measured with a spectrophotometer. A third wavelength (810 nm) where the dye does not absorb is used for control. The accuracy of the CARIOCA system is ±3 μatm. The calibration is done in the laboratory by comparing the response of the spectrophotometer to the fCO2 of a seawater solution determined with an infrared analyzer (Licor 7000). The CARIOCA response is determined over the anticipated range of fCO2. The CARIOCA sensor is calibrated before and after deployment..
  • Parameter or Variable: ATM_PRE; Abbreviation: ATM_PRE; Unit: DBAR; Controlled vocabulary name: BAROMETRIC PRESSURE; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Atmospheric pressure on the buoy is measured using a Vaisala PTB101C, 900-1100 hPa. The accuracy is ±0.3 mb at 20°C and ± 1 mb from 0 to 40°C..
  • Parameter or Variable: SST; Abbreviation: SST; Unit: DEG_C; Controlled vocabulary name: SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Temperature measurements are made with a Betatherm thermistor. It is calibrated at the metrology laboratory of IFREMER (certified by COFRAC). The thermistor is calibrated between -2 and +32°C, with an accuracy of 0.01°C..
  • Parameter or Variable: SSS; Abbreviation: SSS; Controlled vocabulary name: SALINITY; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: in-situ .
