description: Parameter or Variable: Plastic (measured); Units: pieces/km2; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Net tow; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each SEA cruise typically last 4-6 weeks in duration. A neuston net with a 1.0 m x 0.5 m mouth, a 335-µm mesh net, was used for sampling and is towed at the air-sea interface. The tows were conducted for 30 minutes at an estimated ship’s speed of two knots, giving a nominal tow length of one nautical mile (1.852 km). Plastic concentration was computed as total number of pieces collected divided by the tow area (tow length * 1-m net width), and reported in units of pieces km-2.; Data Quality Method: Visual inspection, comparison with published data.
