        abstract:  The data in this record contains water current profile, physical, and chemical vertical observational data from fixed mooring CHRP5 in the central basin of Lake Erie, Great Lakes region during the summer seasons from 2017-05-23 through 2019-10-08. The approximate depth at CHRP5 is 15.3 m. Observations were collected at hourly or sub-hourly time intervals for water temperature and dissolved oxygen. The moorings are designed in a U-shape with a spar buoy and a subsurface buoy approximately 300 ft apart. The spar buoy has a surface expression float and holds the upper water column sensors. The subsurface buoy holds the subsurface float and lower water column sensors. The data files associated with this accession end with “spar” or “subsurface” to differentiate the two locations. The acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) was placed approximately half-way between the spar and subsurface buoy. The vertical placement of temperature and dissolved oxygen sensors, as well as the spatial location of the mooring, varied from year to year. The total depth of the mooring location is approximated from CTD casts and nautical charts. The sensors’ depth from the surface are estimated from the total depth. Onset HOBOs were deployed and collected pressure observations across all years, but provided unreliable data and were not used to correct the sensor depths. This mooring location is one of eight CHRP (Coastal Hypoxia Research Program) moorings that collected observations during the summer season from 2017-2019. Data are in text and NetCDF formats. In 2018, the entire CHRP5 mooring was lost.
        purpose:  Episodes of low dissolved oxygen are common during the summer in the bottom water of the central basin of Lake Erie. Underwater sensor moorings were deployed at eight stations across the central basin of Lake Erie to monitor oxygen conditions. Dissolved oxygen and temperature conditions at a high temporal frequency at multiple stations across Lake Erie provide the supporting data for the development of experimental hypoxia hindcast and forecast models and aid our understanding of the development and extent of hypoxia. This research was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science Competitive Research Program under award NA16NOS4780209 to the University of Michigan and NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory to support the project “Operational Lake Erie Hypoxia Forecasting for Public Water Systems Decision Support.”

            description:  Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
