abstract:  This dataset includes chemical data from discrete samples and accompanying physical data from a profiling CTD collected during the M/V Norseman II and M/V Tiglax Seward Line cruises N2S10 and TXF10 (EXPOCODEs: 32QO20100503 and 33A020100914) in the Gulf of Alaska, North Pacific Ocean from 2010-05-03 to 2010-09-18. These data include dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TA), temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients (Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, and Silicate) and other parameters. The cruise was funded by the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS), and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOSTC). The carbon data were collected and analyzed by personnel at the Ocean Acidification Research Center (OARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The CTD operations on the cruise were managed by personnel from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at UAF. The nutrient data were analyzed by the Whitledge Laboratory at CFOS-UAF. Data files are in .csv format and titled with the ship code (e.g., TX), the season (S = Spring and F = Fall), and the year (e.g., 08-17).
purpose:  The Seward Line is a long-term observation program (LTOP) undertaken from 1998-2004 by the Northeast Pacific GLOBEC program, and continued from 2005-2009 by the North Pacific Research Board. Research cruises during 2008-2017 were funded by a consortium of NPRB, NOAA, AOOS, and EVOSTC. The purpose of this research is to develop an understanding of the response of this marine ecosystem to climate variability. Cruises are conducted each spring (May) and fall (September) along the Seward Line in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and the western region of Prince William Sound. The Ocean Acidification Research Center (OARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) joined the project from 2008 to 2017 to add carbon analyses to the Seward Line LTOP. Understanding carbon dynamics will add to our knowledge of seasonal and inter-annual variability to determine the intensity, duration, and extent of ocean acidification (OA) events in the northern GOA. Coastal regions around Alaska are experiencing the most rapid onset of OA compared to other U.S. regions. Recent research using OA forecast models, as well as species and human impact assessments, have shown that Alaska's coastal communities and fisheries have a varying degree of vulnerability to OA. This dataset provides a much needed time series to understand decadal variability of OA in Alaska's coastal areas.

description:  Parameter or Variable: Temperature; Abbreviation: CTDTMP; Unit: DEG C (ITS-90); Observation type: Measured; Analyzing instrument: Seabird CTD; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: A profiling CTD 911 was used to collect the conductivity, temperature, and depth data at each station. Data are processed using Seabird CTD software and calibration file. Post-processing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks includes filtering extreme outliers, extrapolation of values from the top value collected at ~3-5m to the surface. Each cast is visually reviewed for reasonableness and density inversions (greater than 0.02 sigma-t) caused by spurious measurements. This process is facilitated by comparison of the outputs of the 2 temperature and conductivity sensors. Profile data are bin-averaged to 1 meter.; Uncertainty: 0.001 DEG C; Quality flag convention: All data points are either accepted (retained) or rejected (deleted) during processing, so data are all defined as good.; Researcher name: Seth Danielson/Thomas Weingartner; Researcher institution: University of Alaska Fairbanks.

code:  carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer
type:  carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer
description:  measures gaseous carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide gas analyzer has often been referred to as LI-COR, because a lot of researchers choose to use products manufactured by LI-COR incorporation for their carbon dioxide measurement. The main component of a carbon dioxide analyzer is a nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopic sensors to detect CO2 in a gaseous environment by its characteristic absorption. Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer works together with carbon dioxide (CO2) equilibrator (insttypes_id 184) to measure carbon dioxide in the water. To measure water carbon dioxide, water needs to be continuously supplied to a showerhead inside an equilibrator. As the water flows through the equilibrator chamber, dissolved carbon dioxide exchanges quickly with air in the headspace. This air is then sampled by the carbon dioxide analyzer to determine the mole fraction of CO2 in water.
