abstract: This dataset includes surface underway, chemical, meteorological and physical data collected onboard the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent during the Beaufort Gyre Observing System (BGOS) research cruises in the Beaufort Sea area from 2016-09-25 to 2016-10-17. These data include partial pressure of carbon dioxide - atmosphere, partial pressure of carbon dioxide - water, sea surface salinity, sea surface temperature and velocity of wind. The underway pCO2 data collected using an equilibrator-infrared method (SUPER CO2 system from Sunburst Sensors). Ancillary data for calculation of air-sea CO2 fluxes include temperature, salinity, atmospheric CO2, wind speed, and gas transfer velocity.

The underway pCO2 data collected using an equilibrator-infrared method (SUPER CO2 system from Sunburst Sensors). Ancillary data for calculation of air-sea CO2 fluxes include temperature, salinity, atmospheric CO2, wind speed, and gas transfer velocity (calculated from Wanninkhof et al. (2009). Fluxes are not corrected for fractional ice-coverage. The Shipboard Underway pCO2 Environmental Recorder (SUPER-CO2) utilizes a LICOR NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) analyzer coupled to a membrane contactor to equilibrate a gas stream to a flowing seawater sample stream. The membrane equilibrator was tied into the ship’s seawater line at a set flow rate of ~1.0 liters/min. The SUPER-CO2 uses a Windows based tablet; running custom software, developed by Sunburst Sensors, for instrument control, real-time data display and data collection. Two calibration standards (zero CO2 and 740 ppm CO2) were ran at least once per day for the duration of the cruise. The raw collected SUPER-CO2 data was processed using a custom written Matlab QC program. The Matlab program calibrates the SUPER-CO2 values to the CO2 standards as well as temperature correcting the SUPER-CO2 to the seawater surface temperature (Dickson, 2007). The main component of a carbon dioxide analyzer is a nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopic sensors to detect CO2 in a gaseous environment by its characteristic absorption. Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer works together with carbon dioxide (CO2) equilibrator (insttypes_id 184) to measure carbon dioxide in the water. To measure water carbon dioxide, water needs to be continuously supplied to a showerhead inside an equilibrator. As the water flows through the equilibrator chamber, dissolved carbon dioxide exchanges quickly with air in the headspace.
