abstract: Physical, chemical, and biological water quality data from the western basin of Lake Erie collected between 2012 and 2018. These data were collected during repeated trips to a set of stations before, during, and after harmful algal blooms (HABs). Data for the following parameters are included, wind speed, wave height, Secchi depth, sample temperature, CTD temperature, CTD specific conductivity, CTD beam attenuation, CTD transmission, CTD dissolved oxygen, CTD phytosynthetically active radiation, turbidity, particulate microcystin, dissolved microsystin, extracted phycocyanin, extracted phycocyanin, extracted chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonia, nitrate + nitrite, urea, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, colored dissolved organic material absorbance at 400 nm, total suspended solids, and volatile suspended solids. Table cells with no value means no data available.
purpose: These data were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (NOAA-GLERL) and the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) (NOAA Cooperative Agreement NA17OAR4320152) to support NOAA-GLERL’s operational development of the Lake Erie harmful algal bloom (HAB) forecasts and to directly monitor microcystin concentrations within the ecosystem. We have conducted this discrete field sampling along with continuous field sampling, experimental work, and hydrodynamic-biological mechanistic modeling to ensure development of useful tools and technology for local managers, interfacing with end users- facilitating the translation of research into more effective decision-making and public education.

description: The Secchi disk (or Secchi disc), as created in 1865 by Angelo Secchi, is a plain white, circular disk 30 cm (12 in) in diameter used to measure water transparency or turbidity in bodies of water. The disc is mounted on a pole or line, and lowered slowly down in the water. The depth at which the disk is no longer visible is taken as a measure of the transparency of the water. This measure is known as the Secchi depth and is related to water turbidity. [Wikipedia, 2021-09-02]
