        abstract:  This dataset contains physical, chemical, and biological data collected during research cruises for the Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in Development Area (ANIMIDA) III Study. The study occurred at 107 stations in the Beaufort Sea area in July and August of 2014 and 2015, and involved measurements and sampling of water, sediment, and biota conducted by investigators from several universities and research organizations. The study also includes a spring river survey conducted in May, 2015. The dataset includes more than 50,000 data values across 300+ variables, 500+ taxonomic names, 20+ collection methods, and 40+ lab analysis methods. Seawater samples include variables such as salinity, total suspended solids, and dissolved elements. Samples from the benthic zone include taxonomic counts and biomass. Sediment samples include variables such as hydrocarbons, metals, grain size distribution, and stable isotope ratios. All samples include numerical data value, date of sample collection, location in latitude and longitude coordinates, station identifier, sampling method, and the researcher responsible for the measurement. Furthermore, these data were harmonized according to a community driven set of controlled vocabularies for variable names, chemical speciations, units of measure, sample mediums, and sample types maintained by the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. The data are accompanied by an entity relationship diagram and data dictionary explaining the data structure. CTD, ADCP, and thermosalinograph sensor data are also provided following NCEI's netCDF templates for such data.
        purpose:  The Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in Development Area (ANIMIDA) III program broadens understanding of contaminants, sources, and bioaccumulation in the Beaufort Sea area. The program includes a comprehensive sampling plan to characterize the lease area and surrounding area's chemistry and biota, generating data that are comparable to current and past sampling efforts in the lease area (e.g., past ANIMIDA and cANIMIDA work).

            description:  Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
