NOAA JPSS Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Ocean Color/Chlorophyll (OCC) Environmental Data Record (EDR) from IDPS (Superseded)
VIIRS-OCC-EDR
Global example of the VIIRS Ocean Color/Chlorophyll (OCC) EDR from May 7, 2016. Image retrieved from JPSS LTM system.
Disclaimer: This dataset was superceded by an improved reprocessed product. Please see the documentation tab below for links to the reprocessed dataset. This dataset contains an operational Environmental Data Record (EDR) of Ocean Color/Chlorophyll (OCC) from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Suomi-NPP satellite and is produced by the NOAA Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). The OCC EDR provides chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, Normalized Water-Leaving Radiance (nLw), Inherent Optical Properties of Absorption (IOP-a), Inherent Optical Properties of Scattering (IOP-s), Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient for the down-welling spectral irradiance (Kd490), and Diffuse Attenuation Coefficient for the down-welling photo-synthetically available radiation (KdPAR) at a spatial resolution of 750 meters at nadir. The Ocean Color/Chlorophyll retrieval algorithm utilizes the VIIRS spectral bands M1-M7 (410 nm-862 nm) and M8 (1.24 micron), M10 (1.61 micron), and M11 (2.25 micron). By default, IDPS VIIRS OCC data obtained from the Comprehensive Large-Array Stewardship System (CLASS) are distributed in four aggregated 86-second granules in Hierarchical Data Format v.5 (HDF5) with metadata attributes included.

Purpose |
The VIIRS OCC EDR can be used by researchers to study the ocean's role in the global carbon cycle, and for studying ocean physical properties such as frontal zones and eddies. It can also be used in environmental modeling and can be used to identify bioluminescence potential in global oceans. |
Use Limitations |
- This is a superseded dataset. This version of the data should not be used as a primary research dataset. It may be appropriate to use for reproducing studies that used this earlier version. For a description of other use limitations for this EDR, see the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD).
