Title: | Quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) shell and tissue measurements collected from R/V LAKE GUARDIAN, R/V LAURENTIAN, and other small boats in the Laurentian Great Lakes from 2015-07-20 to 2021-07-21 (NCEI Accession 0242500) |
Abstract: | Invasive dreissenid mussels (quagga mussels, Dreissena rostriformis bugensis and zebra mussels, D. polymorpha) were introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in the 1980’s and have since spread throughout the Great Lakes basin and across North America. Here we present shell length, shell weight, and tissue weights from 2,114 quagga mussels collected from 66 total stations in Lake Michigan (2015, 2021), Lake Huron (2017), Lake Ontario (2018), and Lake Erie (2019) in conjunction with the Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative cycle. Stations were selected to cover different depth zones and geographic regions of each lake. The overall goal of the study was to be able to develop depth and region-specific allometric relationships among shell length, shell weight, and tissue weight values. Depth was recorded upon arrival at each station. Mussels were then collected from the lake bottom using either a Ponar grab sampler (area ~ 0.05 m2), a benthic sled, or hand collected by divers. Multiple samples were taken at each station to obtain a sufficient number and size range of individuals. Mussels were then hand picked from the sediments or rinsed over a 500-3000 μm sieve to remove sediments. The mussels were wrapped in paper towels and placed in petri dishes or plastic totes and stored immediately in a cooler with ice packs and then as soon as possible in a 4℃ incubator. The mussels were processed in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection from the field. Note, in Lake Michigan the 45 m station near Muskegon, MI changed locations slightly between 2015 (M45H) and 2021 (M45). M45H was the historical location that was sampled several times in previous years and M45 is a NOAA GLERL Long-Term Research program station within 2.5km and at a similar depth. |
