Title: GHRSST Level 3C North Atlantic Regional Subskin Sea Surface Temperature from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite (GDS version 2) for 2014-12-18 (NODC Accession 0125354)
Abstract: A Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) dataset for the North Atlantic Region (NAR) from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) platform (launched on 28 Oct 2011). This particular dataset is produced by the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) in France. VIIRS is a whiskbroom scanning radiometer which takes measurements in the cross-track direction within a field of regard of 112.56 degrees, using 16 detectors and double-side mirror assembly. At a nominal altitude of 829 km, the swath width is 3060 km, providing full daily coverage both in the day and night side of the Earth. VIIRS has 22 spectral bands covering the spectrum from 0.4-12 micrometers, including 16 moderate resolution bands (M-bands). The NAR products are SST fields re-mapped onto a 0.02 degree equal angle grid. In the processing chain, global VIIRS level 1B data are acquired at Centre de Meteorologie Spatiale (CMS) through the (High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) system. A cloud mask is applied and SST is retrieved from the VIIRS infrared (IR) channels by using a multispectral technique. The NPP SST L3C data are compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification (GDS) version 2.0.
