Title: Organic carbon, d13C, and total nitrogen content of pelagic sediment from the North Atlantic gyre, South Pacific gyre, and Peru Basin from cruises KN223, KNOX02RR, and ODP leg 201 between 2002 and 2013 (NCEI Accession 0278820)
Abstract: This dataset contains chemical data collected on R/V JOIDES Resolution, R/V Knorr, and R/V Roger Revelle during cruises JRES-201, KN223, and KNOX02RR in the North Atlantic Ocean and South Pacific Ocean from 2002-01-01 to 2013-01-01. These data include Nitrogen, d13C, and depth. The instruments used to collect these data include Advanced Piston Corer, Elemental Analyzer, Gravity Corer, Mass Spectrometer, Multi Corer, and Piston Corer. These data were collected by Emily Estes of Texas A&M University and Colleen Hansel of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of the "Elucidating the extent and composition of mineral-hosted carbon in the deep biosphere (Org C Sed I)" and "Geochemical controls on organic carbon quantity and quality in the deep subsurface (Org C Sed II)" projects and "Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI)" program. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2020-07-14.

The following is the text of the dataset description provided by BCO-DMO:

Dataset Description:
Organic carbon, d13C, and total nitrogen content of pelagic sediment from the North Atlantic gyre, South Pacific gyre, and Peru Basin from cruises KN223 (R/V Knorr), KNOX02RR (R/V Roger Revelle), and ODP leg 201 between 2002 and 2013. Sediment samples were taken with gravity corers, multi corers, piston and advanced piston corers (APC).

These data were published in Estes et al. (2019) as Figure 1.

Supplementary information: Acquisition Description:
Sediment samples were stored at 4°C prior to analysis. Organic carbon, total nitrogen, and d13C were analyzed via element-analyzer isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Prior to analysis, samples were freeze-dried and acidified to remove carbonate.

Instrument: Carlo Erba Elemental Analyzer Model 1108 and Finnegan-MAT DeltaPlus isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometer. The instrument was calibrated and data drift-corrected with USGS-40 (L-glutamic acid) reference material and an in-house glycine standard.
