The "East Sea" is synonymous with the "Sea of Japan" and the "Japan Sea," which is defined in the "Limits of Oceans and Seas, 1953 (3rd edition), Special Publication No. 23, International Hydrographic Bureau." The Republic of Korea calls for the names "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" to be used simultaneously until the countries that border this sea agree on a single name. |
