Term: benthic FOCE-type study
Definition: A Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment (FOCE) type study's in-situ open nature with controlled pH manipulations makes it unique.

It is different from a benthic mesocosm study in that it is open to the environment. In comparison, a mesocosm is an experimental tool that brings a small part of the natural environment under controlled conditions.

It is different from in-situ perturbation experiment in that it is manipulated. In-situ perturbation refers to sites that are naturally acidic, such as natural venting sites where natural pH levels are low enough to be comparable to future pH levels in the open ocean.
