Definition: High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is a biochemistry method (and type of data) that detects the presence and relative concentration of organic compounds in a sample. It is often used in Oceanography to characterize the organic compounds that produce color in plant matter. A variant on this method may be used to characterize functional diversity in microbial populations (for example detection of Harmful Algal Bloom species).
