| Definition: | PCBs are a class of chemical compounds in which 2–10 chlorine atoms are attached to the biphenyl molecule. Monochlorinated biphenyls (i.e., one chlorine atom attached to the biphenyl molecule) are often included when describing PCBs. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of chemicals that have extremely high boiling points and are practically nonflammable. Because of this, they were used extensively as heat transfer fluids in transformers and capacitors. Today they are classified as probable human carcinogens and are listed in the top 10% of EPA’s most toxic chemicals.
