Title: Hawaii Coastal Zone Data Bank 1977 microfiche collection (NCEI Accession 0000033)
Abstract: This dataset is a physical collection of microfiche filmed circa 1977 for the Hawaii Coastal Zone Data Bank. The microfiche was scanned to PDF as part of the Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP).

The Coastal Zone of the State of Hawaii is a valuable resource which is being stressed by the activities of man. Concern for this resource resulted in numerous surveys designed to obtain basic physiochemical and biological data for specific coastal areas. These surveys vary widely in sophistication, thoroughness and the ultimate use made of the data collected. Since perspective in both time and geographic location is essential to efficient resource management, it seemed highly valuable to organize this large body of information so that it could be easily retrieved, combined with new data, analyzed in ways not employed by the original investigators, or compared with data from different locations but subject to the same types and intensities of human perturbation. Thus, the Hawaii Coastal Zone Data Bank (HCZDB) was established to collect environmental data obtained in past, present and future surveys, and to store it in a standardized format for later retrieval and analysis.

The HCZDB grew out of the Seagrant study of Kaneohe Bay starting in 1968 (Atlas of Kaneohe Bay, UNIHI-Seagrant TR-72-01) and the subsequent Army Corps of Engineers study (Waikiki Beach Erosion Project: Marine Environmental Study, HIG-73-12). There was an obvious need to store verified field data from these studies and from other surveys in the coastal zone so that they would be available for future comparison and analysis. Since this type of data was not suitable for publication in scientific journals, and since ease of retrieval was equally as important as storage, a system using the University of Hawaii's computer (IBM 370, Model 158) was established in 1972 as the HCZDB. A special account was set up with the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) and users of the HCZDB were charged by RCUH for computer services plus a small overhead charge (5%). In addition to various individuals on the University campus, current HCZDB users include: The Navy (Marine Environmental Management Office) and the Hawaiian Electric Company.

The Navy's use of the HCZDB expanded the system to include survey data from areas other than Hawaii, including Canton Island, Fanning Island, Enewetak, Puget Sound, and the Southern California Bight. As of 1977, the HCZDB maintained about 1100 datasets on some 350,000 records, a system of storage, retrieval and analysis computer programs and taxonomic list containing 9000 species entries.

West Coast species listings were continuously increased; as of 1977, they accounted for about 2000 of these entries.
