Title: Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities: Coral Propagation Technique Development (CPT) and Habitat Assessment and Evaluation (HAE) Projects Submerged Acquisition of Living Tissue (SALT 2) Expedition PS-22-22 cruise in the Gulf of Mexico from 2022-06-01 to 2022-06-10
Abstract: Twenty-three dives were conducted at twelve sites across fifty-one transects. ROV operations were conducted to sample and survey sites with goals to acquire live corals for husbandry and find an adjacent gene pool for corals at Roughtongue Reef. Live coral fragments were collected for husbandry and propagation at partner labs. New taxa for husbandry - Thesea nivea, Bebryce sp., and Villogorgia sp. were collected. Coral snips were also collected for microbiology, population genetics, barcoding, and reproduction data. CTD rosette casts were conducted daily with water sampling for husbandry and eDNA. In situ sensors and data loggers for monitoring and laboratory simulation were deployed for temperature and current meters and recovered one CYCLE data sensor for light and temperature parameters. Highlight videos were collected for outreach and education purposes as well.
