The Ocean Archive System searches our original datasets as they were submitted to us, not individual points or profiles. Title: Concentration of PCB Aroclors, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), and other parameters, Manistique Harbor, MI, 2012-09-17 to 2012-09-21 (NCEI Accession 0151632)
Abstract: This project was part of a team effort by NOAA, the EPA, the State of Michigan, and the USGS to collect samples of sediments within the Manistique Harbor Area of Concern to better delineate the arial extent and depth of PCB contamination in sediments. NOAA collected samples within 3 zones only, zones 3, 4, and 6. A total of 32 different locations were selected based on where it had been determined that data was inadequate. These were sampled by extracting a core of sediment using core sampling equipment that drove a 4 inch diameter core sampler either to refusal, or to a sediment depth of 10 feet, except 2 locations where the core was driven to 12 and 13 feet. These cores were then taken to shore and opened to expose the core so that individual layers could be seen. Individual analytical samples were then collected from various depth intervals in each core to represent the various layers observed. A total of 165 such analytical samples were collected, plus several quality control samples. These samples were sent to an off site laboratory for analysis for PCB Aroclors, total organic carbon, sediment size, moisture content and percent. After this initial analysis, 10 of the samples with the highest PCB Aroclor concentration were analyzed for PCB congeners. Data are in .csv format.

The Manistique River flows from the northeast through Schoolcraft County in Michigan's central Upper Peninsula and discharges into Lake Michigan at the City of Manistique. The Manistique River Area of Concern upstream boundary begins at the dam in Manistique and extends downstream through the Manistique Harbor, a total length of approximately 1.7 miles. Historical impacts to the Manistique River are associated with wastes from a paper recycling facility (polychlorinated biphenyls from de-inking processes), sawmills, combined sewer overflows, and a municipal wastewater treatment plant.
