Title: BIRDS from VARIOUS SMALL NAVY VESSELS from 1979-01-01 to 1979-12-31 (NCEI Accession 8100577)
Abstract: Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Marine Bird Survey (F041) format.

Marine Bird Surveys (F041) data type contains data from field observations (land surveys) of marine birds and the environment in which they were sighted. These data are collected to provide information on population density and distribution. Position, date, start time, elapsed time and survey segment area and distance are recorded for each survey. The survey environment is described by vegetation type, geological characteristics, beach substrate, upland type, nearshore bathymetry, meteorological and tidal conditions. Species information includes number of individuals by age and sex. Information such as age, sex, location, condition, presence of oil and cause of death may also be reported for individual specimens. These data were collected in 1978 - 1979 for Puget Sound as part of the Marine EcoSystems Analysis (MESA) Puget Sound Project.

Supplementary information: Note: Metadata for this accession were extracted from a legacy database maintained by the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). The design of the database did not exactly reflect the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).

Principal Investigator (PI) and organization contact information accurately represents all available information from the legacy database at the time that this description was created. However, proper attribution of a PI to a specific institution or the role (submitting or collecting) taken by an institution may not be correct due to inexact mapping between fields in the legacy database and the CSDGM. Due to this uncertainty, the contact information was initially recorded in the Supplemental Information element of the CSDGM description.

To develop more accurate metadata, NCEI reviews metadata for all accessions on an ongoing basis.
