Title: Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from US GEOTRACES North Atlantic Transect cruise on the R/V Knorr KN199-04 in the subtropical N. Atlantic in 2010 (U.S. GEOTRACES NAT project) (NCEI Accession 0278628)
Abstract: This dataset contains chemical data collected on R/V Knorr during cruise KN199-04 in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2010-10-16 to 2010-11-02. These data include depth, dissolved organic Carbon, and dissolved organic Carbon standard deviation. The instruments used to collect these data include Niskin bottle, Pump surface, and Total Organic Carbon Analyzer. These data were collected by Charles McClain and Joaquin Chaves of National Aeronautics and Space Administration as part of the "U.S. GEOTRACES North Atlantic Transect (U.S. GEOTRACES NAT)" project and "U.S. GEOTRACES (U.S. GEOTRACES)" program. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2020-05-01.

The following is the text of the dataset description provided by BCO-DMO:

Methods for the Collection and Measurement of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC): Seawater samples for analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption are filtered under a gentle vacuum (
Standard curves of the manufacturer-recommended carbon standard, potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), ranging from ~500 to 4000 μg C L-1 and from ~500 to 2000 μg C L-1 are conducted daily. KHP check standards are interspersed between every 6 samples for each sample batch to verify the consistency of the standard curve throughout each sample batch analyzed. To minimize salt accumulation in the instrument flow path, Milli-Q water blanks are inserted between every 3 samples for each batch of samples. Injection volumes for seawater samples, standards and blanks are typically 120μL.
