Title: Fish and jellyfish sample data from R/V Centennial trawl surveys in the Hood Canal, WA from 2012-2013 (PelagicHypoxia project) (NCEI Accession 0278227)
Abstract: This dataset contains biological and survey - biological data collected on R/V Centennial during cruise PelagicHypoxia_trawlsurveys from 2012-06-11 to 2013-10-03. These data include species. The instruments used to collect these data include GPS receiver, Midwater Trawl, and Water Depth Logger. These data were collected by Sandra Parker-Stetter of Northwest Fisheries Science Center - Seattle and John K. Horne, Julie E. Keister, and Timothy Essington of University of Washington as part of the "Consequences of hypoxia on food web linkages in a pelagic marine ecosystem (PelagicHypoxia)" project. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NCEI on 2021-03-22.

The following is the text of the dataset description provided by BCO-DMO:

Sampling and analytical procedures:
Samples were chosen to target representative aggregations of fish as detected using multi-beam hydroacoustics. They are not designed to provide quantitative estimates of density, but rather to assess species and size composition and to collect individuals for tissue and stomach sampling. Net was a Marinovich midwater trawl, deployed using two wires and 2.5 meter FishBuster trawl doors. Trawl was fitted with a 3.2 mm knotless liner in the codend and towed at a vessel speed of 2āˆ’3 knots. Vertical opening of the trawl varied between 4.8 and 7.0 m.

Stomachs were dissected after euthanizing fish an overdose of MS-222. If samples were deemed to be empty at that point, they were not preserved. Otherwise, entire stomach was preserved in 90% ethanol. Some stomachs were inverted from barotrauma. These were not preserved and documented with an ā€œIā€.
