Title: Zooplankton abundance collected from NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson in Bering Sea from 2017-09-24 to 2017-10-04 (NCEI Accession 0211098)
Abstract: The dataset consists of zooplankton abundance estimates from an ecosystem survey in the Bering Sea. The survey follows the 70 m isobath along the middle shelf. At each station, a bongo net array is towed to within 10 m of the bottom depth at a speed of approximately 1.5 knots. The bongo net consists of two nets of 60 cm diameter equipped with a 505 um mesh net and two nets of 20 cm diameter equipped with 153 um mesh net. The net is also equipped with General Oceanics flowmeters to estimate the volume of water filtered by each net.

Supplementary information: The dataset contains a ZOOP_CATEGORY column that separates abundances of copepods into two categories, one for small copepods ( 2 mm in size). The CRUISE column lists the abbreviation for the research cruise, DY17-08, which stands for Oscar Dyson (DY) the research vessel, 17 (2017) the year, and 08, the survey number for that year. STATION is a unique, numerical identifier that indicates a sampling location. Stations are numbered consecutively each time samples are collected. GEAR_NAME contains an indicator of the gear used, 60 BON is the 60 cm bongo net; 20BON is the 20 cm bongo net. MESH indicates the size of the mesh used for the net in um. LAT is the decimal latitude indegrees where the sample was taken, positive values are north (0,90) and negative values (0, -90) are south of the equator. LON is the decimal longitude where the sample was taken, positive values are east to 180 (0, 180) and negative values are west (0, -180) of the prime meridian. DAY is the day of the month when the sample was taken. MONTH is the month of the year when the sample was taken. YEAR is the year the sample was taken. EST_NUM_PERM3 is the abundance of the zooplankton category in numbers of individuals per cubic meter. EST_NUM_PERM3 is estimated by counting the organisms of a particular taxa in the net and dividing by the total volume filtered (in cubic meters) as estimated by the flowmeter.
